It’s Crabby Joe’s game day. The Exeter Hawks face off against the Port Stanley Sailors tonight at 8pm at the South Huron Recreation Centre in Exeter for the first game of round 2 playoffs.
For Max Dupuis, Overage Defenseman for the Hawks, hockey has been a lifelong passion, and his journey with the Exeter Hawks has been one of resilience, growth, and dedication. As his overage season comes to an end, Max reflected on his time with the team, the challenges he’s overcome, and what lies ahead in the playoffs.
Growing up in Bayfield, Max first stepped onto the ice at public skates on Sunday afternoons. His love for the game grew from there, leading him to play for teams like the BCH Ice Dogs and the Sarnia Junior Sting before joining the Hawks.
His position as a defenseman was not originally his choice—his early years saw him as a puck-hungry forward until his coach moved him to defense.
This season has been especially significant for Max. After undergoing knee surgery last summer, he wasn’t sure if he would return to the ice.
In December, the Hawks gave him another opportunity, and now he is back with the team.
Despite missing the start of the season, he quickly bonded with his teammates, many of whom he had played with before.
Now in the second round of playoffs, the Hawks are preparing to face Port Stanley after sweeping Aylmer in the first round. Max knows how important every game is, especially in his last season.
Beyond the game itself, Max noted the community aspect of the Hawks organization. From participating in local events to forming lifelong friendships, he believes hockey is about more than just the sport.
The Hawks’ fans also play a big role in the team’s energy. Max describes them as dedicated and loud, always cheering the team on.
He says having the fans there makes the game worth it, no matter the outcome.
Looking to the upcoming series against Port Stanley, he believes the key to success is sticking to their game plan.
As the playoffs continue, Max has one message for the fans.
Go tonight and cheer on your hometown Hawks! Come before or after the game and fuel up at Crabby Joe’s in Exeter.
