Tax season can be a stressful time, especially for people who may struggle to file their taxes. United Way Perth-Huron (UWPH)’s Social Research and Planning Council (SRPC) wants to raise awareness about local free tax clinics that help people with low incomes get the refunds and benefits they deserve.
“About 10 to 12 percent of Canadians don’t file their taxes,” said Kristin Crane, UWPH’s Director of Community Impact and Research. “This can be especially tough for families with low incomes because they miss out on important refunds and benefits. These free tax clinics help close that gap.”
The free clinics help seniors, newcomers, students, and people receiving social assistance. In 2024, volunteers at tax clinics in Huron County and Grand Bend filed over 1,000 tax returns, bringing in $1.8 million in refunds and benefits for those who needed them.
To find a tax clinic near you, call 2-1-1 or visit 211ontario.ca. If you are owed money, you can file your taxes at any time of the year.
There is a need for more volunteers to help run tax clinics in parts of Perth County and Stratford. If you are interested in helping, email taxclinics@perthhuron.unitedway.ca.
