Voter turnout in our region was strong during the recent federal election, with most local ridings seeing more people vote than the national average of 68.65%.
Huron-Bruce led the way with 75.2% of eligible voters casting a ballot. Other local ridings also did well: Middlesex-London had 73%, Perth-Wellington and Sarnia—Lambton—Bkejwanong both saw 71%, and Elgin-St. Thomas-London South came in just under the national average at 68.2%.
These numbers show that people in our area remain interested in federal politics, even though voter turnout across Canada has been slowly dropping over the decades. In the mid-1900s, nearly 80% of Canadians voted in federal elections.
This year, more than 19.5 million people voted across the country. It was the highest voter turnout since the 1993 election, which had nearly a 70% participation rate.
