The Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) is working with Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) to raise awareness about the rise in youth vaping and the effects of technology and social media. Recent surveys from 2023 show that more young people in Huron Perth are vaping compared to the provincial average. The surveys also show that less than one percent of youth are meeting the daily recommended screen time limits.
To help parents and families better understand these issues, AMDSB is hosting free in-person film screenings. The film, called Screenagers: Growing up in the Digital Age (2025 update), looks at the latest science, research, and expert advice on technology and social media. Students are welcome to attend the screenings too. Snacks will be provided, and childcare will be available for families with young children, but families are asked to register for childcare in advance through a provided Google Form.
The screenings will take place on Tuesday, May 6th, 2025, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The film will be shown at four locations across the region: Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton, Listowel District Secondary School in Listowel, Mitchell District Secondary School in Mitchell, and Stratford District Secondary School in Stratford. Families can attend whichever location is most convenient for them. Please note that the film is not available for online viewing.
At the same time, AMDSB is also launching an anti-vaping campaign. The campaign is aimed at students, staff, and parents or guardians. It will focus on raising awareness about the dangers of vaping, offering strategies for parents to talk to their children about the issue, and providing support and resources to help young people quit vaping.
