With summer travel ramping up, CAA South Central Ontario and the Ontario Provincial Police are reminding drivers to follow Ontario’s Slow Down, Move Over law — a critical safety measure designed to protect roadside emergency workers.
Today marks National Slow Down, Move Over Day, recognized annually by CAA clubs across Canada on the second Tuesday in May. The push coincides with the launch of Canada Road Safety Week, further underscoring the need to make highways safer for all.
“Our highways are among the busiest in Canada, and for first responders and tow truck drivers, they are also their workplaces,” said Michael Stewart. “Everyone deserves a safe place to work.”
Ontario’s law requires drivers to slow down and move over one lane, if safe, when approaching emergency vehicles or tow trucks with flashing lights. Penalties for non-compliance include fines of $400 to $2,000, three demerit points, and possible licence suspension.
“Each year, first responders and tow operators are put at risk when assisting stranded drivers,” said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmitt. “Education and awareness are key.”
CAA and the OPP are urging drivers to prioritize safety — not just this summer, but every day.
