Liberal MP Francis Scarpaleggia has been elected the new Speaker of the House of Commons. He represents the Quebec riding of Lac-Saint-Louis and was chosen by fellow MPs in a secret ranked ballot.
The Speaker’s job is to manage debates in the House, keep order, and act as a fair and neutral leader. Although Scarpaleggia is a Liberal, he must now step away from party politics and stay impartial.
In his first speech, he thanked MPs for their trust and asked for patience as he steps into the role. Prime Minister Mark Carney, speaking for the first time in the House, congratulated Scarpaleggia and warned his caucus that busy weeks and months lie ahead.
Carney also spoke about the importance of rules, tradition, and democracy in Parliament. He supported Scarpaleggia’s earlier comparison of Canada’s Parliament to the golden age of Athens, saying “we will prevail.”
