The Menesetung Bridge Association recently shared an update with Huron County council about the ongoing efforts to restore the well-known bridge.
Treasurer Michael Dawson told council members that phase one of the repair work is ready to begin this month. But to start the second phase, the group still needs to raise an additional $180,000.
Dawson explained that they’ve asked local councils and community partners for support, but haven’t had any success so far. A bank did offer a loan, but it would come with interest and would need to be paid back by 2026, something that would require even more fundraising.
During the meeting, council voted on a motion to give the group $300,000 to help with the project, but it was not approved. A second motion, which would have provided the group with an interest-free loan, was also rejected.
Even though funding remains a challenge, the Menesetung Bridge Association says they are still focused on preserving the bridge for future generations to enjoy.
