The Huron County Pride Festival is back, and it’s bigger than ever. Now in its third year, the event has grown from a one-day celebration into a full week of programming, filled with activities for all ages and interests.
Pride Chair Alex Jebson explains the festival.
The festival will take place from June 2nd to June 8th in Courthouse Square in Goderich. Even with ongoing construction in the area, organizers say the show will go on, rain or shine.
The day promises a vibrant mix of music, performances, community booths, and a family pride area with a fun fairy-tale theme called “Once Upon a Pride.”
Throughout the week leading up to the main event, Pride organizers have planned a wide variety of activities.
One highlight is a special screening of the documentary Are You Proud? at the Huron County Museum, which explores the history of the queer rights movement in the UK.
Most events are free to attend, and everyone is welcome. A few activities-like trivia night and a cookie decorating workshop at Blake Street Bakery require registration to make sure there are enough supplies and space for everyone.
Organizers say turning the celebration into a week-long festival helps make Pride more inclusive and gives people a chance to take part in whatever events speak to them most. It’s a celebration, but also a chance to educate and advocate for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
Volunteers are a big part of what makes the week possible, and the Pride team says they’re always happy to welcome more helpers.
This year’s entertainment lineup includes Danish singer-songwriter Tim Schou, a former Eurovision finalist, as well as local drag performers and community entertainers. The family area will be full of activities for kids and parents to enjoy together.
Organizers encourage everyone to come out, show their support, and enjoy the many events on offer. Whether it’s your first Pride or your third, the message is the same: everyone is welcome.
