A special air quality warning is in effect for Exeter, Goderich, Bluewater, and Southern Huron County due to smoke from wildfires. The smoke is causing poor air quality and low visibility in the area.
Environment officials say the smoke is expected to stay in the region throughout today. Conditions may slowly improve overnight, but there could still be smoke in the air on Friday.
When smoke levels rise, the risk to people’s health also increases. Everyone is being asked to limit time spent outdoors, especially during sports or other activities. Some people may notice mild symptoms like itchy eyes, sore throat, headaches, or coughing. In some cases, people may have trouble breathing, chest pain, or a strong cough. Anyone feeling very sick should get medical help right away.
Certain groups of people are more at risk from bad air, including seniors, pregnant people, babies and young children, those with existing health issues, and people who work outside. Health officials say these people should take extra care, avoid strenuous activity outdoors, and see a doctor if they feel unwell.
When indoors, it’s best to keep windows and doors closed. If it’s also hot outside, try to stay cool safely. You can protect indoor air by using clean air filters in your home or a certified portable air cleaner that removes smoke particles.
If you have to go outside, wearing a high-quality mask like a NIOSH-certified N95 can help reduce the amount of smoke you breathe in, though it won’t remove all risks.
Officials also ask people to check in on friends, family, and neighbours who may be more affected by the poor air quality.
