Pride Month is here, and Huron County Pride Chair Alex Jebson says it’s not just about parades and rainbow flags, it’s about bringing people together, raising awareness, and continuing the work for equal rights and acceptance.
Jebson, who also works as a minister, says Pride is a mix of different parts.
Although society has become more accepting over time, Jebson says there are still challenges, especially when it comes to attitudes toward the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
Pride Month, Jepson explains, started as a social movement back in the 1960s and 70s when people stood up against discrimination.
Over time, it’s grown into a full celebration with parades and performances, but it still carries the important message of education, advocacy, and acceptance.
For anyone in the community who may be thinking about coming out but feels unsure, Jebson has advice.
To learn more about Huron County Pride and how to get involved, Jepson encourages people to visit their website at huroncountypride.ca, follow them on Facebook or Instagram, or send an email to pridehuroncounty@gmail.com.
