The Huron Historic Gaol in Goderich is getting ready for a very special party. On Saturday, July 5th, the Gaol will host a free open house to celebrate 50 years since it was named a National Historic Site. Everyone is welcome to come enjoy the fun from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Ben Baker, a student who works at the jail over the summer, shared details about the event.
There will also be free cake and ice cream (while supplies last), and even alpacas for kids and families to meet. The county’s public works team will also bring a big backhoe for children to explore.
Visitors can also take photos at special selfie spots and meet two costumed volunteers who will walk around the Gaol, telling stories and answering questions.
The day is not just a fun community event, it also marks 50 years since the Huron Historic Gaol was officially recognized as a National Historic Site. Baker says this shows how important the building is to local history.
The Gaol first opened in 1841 and was used until 1972. It tells the story of Huron County’s past and helps keep local history alive.
There’s something extra for people who worked at the jail as students any time from 1975 to now.
Baker hopes families, especially kids who like history, will come out. He says the Gaol and the Huron County Museum are the perfect places to learn more about local history.
Everyone is welcome to come by, enjoy the day, and celebrate 50 years of remembering the Gaol’s important past.
