With measles cases continuing to rise across Ontario, including in Huron and Perth counties, Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) is asking summer day camps and programs to take extra steps to keep children and staff safe.
Measles is a very contagious virus that spreads quickly, especially in group settings like camps. Dr. Miriam Klassen, Medical Officer of Health for Huron Perth, says the best way to prevent measles is through vaccination. She also stresses that camps need to be ready to handle possible cases to help protect the wider community.
HPPH is asking camp leaders to remind parents and caregivers to keep children’s vaccination records up to date and to have them ready in case someone is exposed to measles. Camp staff should also know the symptoms of measles, understand how to report a possible case, and follow proper steps to manage it.
Organizers are encouraged to visit www.hpph.ca/measles before camp begins and to check the website regularly for updates and advice.
HPPH says it is continuing to watch the outbreak closely and will share more information as needed.
