The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding everyone heading out onto the water this summer to make safety a top priority, following a busy weekend marked by numerous marine incidents across the province.
Officers from multiple OPP detachments responded to a high number of calls on waterways they patrol. As boating activity ramps up during the summer months, police are urging the public to take proactive steps to prevent injuries and fatalities.
Key risk factors in serious marine incidents continue to include alcohol or drug impairment, operator inexperience, and failure to wear a lifejacket. According to the OPP, most deaths occur after a person falls overboard or a vessel capsizes—situations where a lifejacket can mean the difference between life and death.
Wearing a lifejacket at all times, regardless of swimming ability or experience level, is critical. If you are knocked unconscious, a properly fitted lifejacket will keep your head above water and dramatically increase your chances of survival.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable summer on the water:
Always check the weather before heading out.
Make sure your boat is in good working condition and fully equipped.
Never boat under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Keep a close eye on children near water.
Swim with a buddy and stay within your comfort zone.
Follow all posted signage and safety advisories.
The OPP also encourages all boaters to review Transport Canada’s Safe Boating Guide, which provides essential information on equipment, navigation, and emergency procedures. You can access it here: Safe Boating Guide
