It’s been a wild week of weather in the area with two significant storm events confirmed or under investigation.
In Mitchell, a EF1 downburst (not a tornado) was confirmed by the Northern Tornadoes Project after a storm hit last Thursday (July 24th). Wind speeds reached up to 150 kilometres per hour, tearing through barns, trees, power poles, and crops. The damage stretched across a path 13.4 kilometres long and nearly 9 kilometres wide. There were no injuries reported after the storm, just minor damages.
Then, just two days later, it appears a tornado touched down between Goderich and Clinton last night (Saturday evening). A Marine Tornado Warning was issued for the Lake Huron shoreline around Goderich at 6:45 p.m., and by 7 p.m., funnel clouds were spotted inland. Again, no injuries were reported. Trees were downed but no major property damage has been reported.
The Northern Tornadoes Project launched its official investigation however, it may take some time before an official classification is confirmed.
With two severe weather events in the span of just a few days, storm watchers are keeping a close eye.
