Huron Perth Public Health is warning residents about poor air quality due to wildfire smoke from fires burning in the Prairies. On the evening of July 30th, Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a special air quality statement for several parts of Huron and Perth counties, including Exeter, Southern Huron County, Wingham, Blyth, Goderich, Bluewater, Stratford, and Mitchell.
The wildfire smoke has moved into the area, causing hazy skies and poor visibility. The air quality may remain poor throughout the day but is expected to improve later. While the fires are far away, the smoke can travel thousands of kilometres and still affect the health of people living far from the fire zones.
Health officials are reminding residents to monitor their symptoms and avoid strenuous outdoor activity when the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is high. Those most at risk include children, older adults, pregnant people, anyone with heart or lung conditions, and people who work outdoors.
Huron Perth Public Health has a limited supply of N95 respirator masks available for people who are most vulnerable to smoke. These masks are available at their Stratford and Clinton offices.
To stay safe, people are encouraged to stay indoors with the windows and doors closed, drink lots of water, and use air conditioning or fans to help keep indoor air clean. If you must go outside, wearing a well-fitted N95 mask can help reduce your exposure to harmful particles in the smoke.
