The Huron Women’s Shelter is launching a new kind of housing and care program, thanks to a major grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The grant, part of the Foundation’s GROW program, will help the shelter build a more complete model of care for women and children recovering from gender-based violence.
Genelle Reid, the shelter’s Fund Development Coordinator, said the grant means the world to the shelter.
Right now, women in the shelter’s housing program can access services like court support and counselling. The new model will add more personal and ongoing support.
Some of the changes are already underway, with more to come over the next three years.
The shelter will keep building and adjusting the program with feedback from women and families who use it.
Reid said the team hopes this model will serve as an example for other communities too.
Looking ahead, the shelter is working on ways to keep the new program running after the grant ends.
Reid added how thankful the team is for the Ontario Trillium Foundation’s support.
