Rip currents can happen in Lake Huron, and they can be very dangerous if you don’t know what to do. These strong currents often form near the shore and pull swimmers out into deeper water very quickly.
You can sometimes spot a rip current by looking for areas where the waves are not breaking regularly. The water might appear darker and rougher than the water around it. You may also notice foam, sand, or seaweed moving along with the current.
If you get caught in a rip current, it’s important to stay calm and avoid panicking. Try to stand up and walk out of the current if you can. If you’re using a board or float, hold onto it. Never try to swim directly back to shore, as the current can be too strong. Instead, swim sideways, along the beach, until you’re out of the current. Once you’re free, swim back to the shore at an angle.
