Strong Start® Charitable Organization has teamed up with the Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) to launch a new reading program in schools across Huron and Perth Counties.
The program, called Letters, Sounds and Words™, is designed for children from Year 2 Kindergarten to Grade 2. It gives young students one-on-one support from trained volunteer coaches to help them become stronger readers.
The 10-week program uses games and activities to teach letter recognition, sound blending, and word reading. It is based on the Science of Reading and matches Ontario’s language curriculum.
Strong Start has been running literacy programs since 2001 and has already helped more than 60,000 children improve their reading skills. The group hopes to bring Letters, Sounds and Words™ to 750 schools in 750 days.
Community members can also get involved by becoming volunteer coaches. More information about the program and how to volunteer can be found on the Strong Start website.
