Lambton County OPP is warning residents about a phone scam after $10,000 was fraudulently withdrawn from a resident’s bank account on August 11th. Police say the victim received a call from someone claiming to be a Bell technician, offering a refund. The caller asked for remote access to the victim’s computer to “process the payment.” Once connected, the scammer accessed the victim’s online banking and withdrew funds. Thanks to the victim’s quick report and police intervention, no further withdrawals were made. Plenty more on our website.
Police are reminding the public:
Legitimate companies will never request remote access to your computer to issue a refund.
Do not share your banking information or passwords with anyone over the phone or online.
Hang up immediately if you suspect a scam and contact the company directly using official contact numbers.
Report suspicious calls to police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
