A conservationist speaks to children about the species of turtles being released
The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) is inviting families to its annual Turtle Release on Thursday, August 28, from 9am to noon. at the Morrison Dam Conservation Area near Exeter.
Hope Brock, Healthy Watersheds Specialist with ABCA explains the event.
Along with the releases, the event will feature family-friendly activities.
The baby turtles being released were rescued from unsafe nest sites in the conservation area and nearby trails.
Organizers expect more than 100 snapping turtles and about 30 painted turtles will be released this year.
Because the turtles are sensitive, only trained staff and volunteers can release them. Visitors are welcome to watch and take photos but not handle the turtles themselves.
The event is free to attend, but donations are encouraged to support turtle conservation in Ontario. All eight native turtle species in the province are at risk, and funds help protect them.
Brock mentioned this year’s event is extra special.
To help spread out crowds, organizers suggest booking a time slot on Eventbrite, though tickets are not required to attend. Guests can drop in anytime between 1 and 4 p.m.
