OPP are warning the public after a fraud in Middlesex left one person out nearly $10,000.
Police say it happened on August 13th, around 2:51 p.m., when the victim got an unexpected phone call claiming their credit card had been compromised. A man later came to the victim’s home, saying he was there to help. Instead, he collected banking and cell phone details, along with passwords.
The suspect is described as a younger Black man who was wearing a suit and driving a small grey car. Not long after leaving, several purchases were made using the victim’s information, adding up to about $10,000.
The OPP are reminding residents that fraud is a major issue and scammers often use high-pressure tactics to confuse victims into giving up personal information. Police say it is important to verify any request before responding, and to never allow strangers into your home.
Anyone who has had a similar experience, or who recognizes the suspect, is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips can also be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, with the possibility of a cash reward.
The investigation is ongoing.
