Alexandra Marine and General Hospital (AMGH) is making major improvements to its mental health unit. The renovations are not just about updating the space, they are aimed at giving patients better care and a more positive experience.
The project is happening in three phases, thanks to generous donations through the AMGH Foundation. The hospital is currently working on the first phase, which includes expanding and renovating the nurses’ station and building a new medication room. The second phase will add a staff washroom, a patient laundry room, and a small kitchen area for patients. The final phase will improve the patient dining room, replace the solarium window, and refresh the patient lounge and group room to make them brighter and more welcoming. Hospital officials hope to finish the final phase by the end of February 2026.
Even while construction is underway, mental health services at AMGH continue without interruption. The hospital’s community-based program, Huron Community Mental Health Services, provides care for people experiencing moderate to severe mental health challenges. The program offers individual counselling, skills training, and group therapy at five sites across Huron County. Group sessions include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), assertiveness training, and a new self-compassion group. AMGH also serves as a satellite site for specialized eating disorder support.
This fall, the hospital will welcome two new psychiatrists, Dr. Anne Rose and Dr. Michele Doering. Dr. Doering brings special expertise in geriatric psychiatry.
