It has been a busy stretch for the Grand Bend Beach Patrol, with 37 rescues and assists taking place over the last two weekends. More than 43,000 people visited Grand Bend Beach during this time, keeping lifeguards on high alert.
Over the two weekends, lifeguards carried out 18 rescues and 19 assists. They also responded to four major first aid calls that required EMS and 14 minor first aid situations that did not need emergency services.
Beach Patrol members are reminding visitors about the dangers of pool floaties on Lake Huron. They say the best choice is to leave floaties at home. Floaties are often involved in rescues because they can quickly drift into deeper water when winds, waves, or strong currents change.
Officials warn that even strong swimmers, or those wearing lifejackets, can find themselves in a dangerous situation when using floaties. They stress that conditions on the lake can change suddenly and create risks for anyone caught too far from shore.
