The Huron-Perth Children’s Aid Society is reminding the community that their role is about much more than child protection. The organization runs more than 30 programs in Huron and Perth counties, focusing on helping families meet their basic needs and creating stronger, healthier homes.
A new way to help people in need is being offered in the community through “Kindness Kits” at the H-PCAS. These kits are filled with items and are designed to give practical support to children, families, and youth. Trish Harris, volunteer coordinator told myFM more about the program.
These kits are designed to ease financial pressure for families by providing essentials and support. Personal Wellness Kits cost $200 and can include school supplies, birthday items, groceries, hygiene products, or warm winter gear. Home Wellness Kits are valued at $300 and focus on keeping homes safe and comfortable, with items for laundry, cleaning, safety, or even car emergencies. Connection Kits, which cost $500, bring families together with holiday support, recreational activities, or access to a phone. The largest option is the Starting Out Kit at $1000, which provides a fresh start with supplies for a new baby, setting up a bedroom, finding work, or moving toward independence.
The kits are tailored to each family’s needs. Donors can choose which type of kit to support, or they can give any amount of money toward a kit purchase.
Executive Director Kristian Wilson added that donations from the community are essential to making the program work.
Donations go directly to local families in need, and Wilson told myFM us that you never truly know who in the community may be quietly facing struggles behind closed doors. A simple act of giving can make a big difference for a neighbour who might be finding it hard to ask for help.
Wilson noted that when someone makes a donation, there is always a personal connection, because every contribution has a direct impact on real people in the community. Donors can feel comfort in knowing their support is not just going into a program, but into the hands of a child, parent, or family who will benefit right away.
Beyond the Kindness Kits, the agency also offers a wide range of community programs, including parenting classes, cooking programs like Mighty Meals, and school snack programs in partnership with the Huron Food Bank Distribution Centre. With nearly 30 programs available each year, both in-person and virtual, families can sign up for what best meets their needs through the agency’s website.
