Communities and schools across Canada are gearing up for Terry Fox runs this Sunday, (Sept. 14th) ready to add funds to the ever-growing tally for cancer research.
Terry’s siblings, including his brother Fred, are keeping his legacy alive, crossing the country, promoting the 45th Anniversary of the Marathon of Hope.
Fred says the Terry Fox Foundation has raised well over 900-million dollars and they could hit the 1 Billion mark this year.
Brining the run close to home, three communities in Huron County are preparing for this year’s run.
Exeter’s run takes place at MacNaughton Park on Sunday, September 14th, starting at 10 a.m. Last year’s event was the best ever, raising $45,383 with 185 people taking part in person or online. Since 1982, Exeter has raised more than $533,000 for Terry Fox cancer research. So far this year, the event has already brought in $34,450.
Wingham will host its 37th annual run at the Lions Picnic Shelter by the splash pad, on Sunday, September 14th. Last year, 262 people took part and raised a record $37,225. Registration opens at 10 a.m., with the run, walk, or bike starting at 11 a.m., followed by a free community barbecue.
Goderich will also hold its run that same day, with registration at 12:30 p.m. at the Kinsmen Centre, 185 Keays Street.
Fred adds what’s most important, is the impact the money raised has had on cancer research in Canada.
He says this year’s theme, Finish It, focuses on the eradication of cancer.
