With students across Ontario now back in the classroom, the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) is shining a spotlight on the vital role of school food programs in helping children succeed.
Through the Ontario Student Nutrition Program (OSNP), thousands of students in Southwestern Ontario start their day with access to healthy meals and snacks. The program aims to level the playing field, ensuring every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive, while also creating inclusive spaces where students feel a sense of belonging.
“These programs are foundational to learning,” said Danielle Findlay, Supervisor of Community Relations with VON’s Ontario Student Nutrition Program. “When students are nourished, they are better able to focus, participate and succeed in school. But school food programs also go further — they build community, reduce stigma and help students feel included and valued.”
Research shows reliable access to nutritious food improves attendance, classroom engagement, and mental well-being, while culturally responsive menus reflect the diversity of Ontario’s student population.
VON says the program’s impact wouldn’t be possible without community support. Volunteers dedicate their time to prepare and serve food, while donations help extend limited budgets to reach more children.
“As we begin a new school year, we are calling on our community to join us,” Findlay added. “Whether it’s donating funds, volunteering time, or spreading the word, every contribution makes a difference.”
The Ontario Student Nutrition Program is coordinated by VON in Southwestern Ontario, supporting more than 450 breakfast, lunch, and healthy snack programs across the region.
