High school football is back and booming in Norfolk County, and Week One came in like a Chris Berman “WHOOP!”—full of rivalries, turnovers, and big-play fireworks. Almost every game this season will light up Friday afternoons and evenings, and opening week didn’t disappoint.
The headline bout was the annual Mud Jug clash between the Delhi District Secondary School Raiders and the Simcoe Composite School Sabres—a grudge match dating back to the 1970s and a rematch of last year’s championship. Last fall the Sabres swiped the coveted jug, but this year the Raiders slammed the door. Delhi’s defense played lights-out, forcing a pile of Sabre turn overs, while the offense cashed in like clockwork for a thunderous 48-0 win. The Sabres showed flashes of talent but wrestled with early-season substitution chaos.
History was also made as the Valley Heights Bears and Cayuga Warriors returned to official league play after years away. Their hard-fought 6-2 Bears victory was a win for everyone in local football. Welcome back teams!
Elsewhere, McKinnon Park Blue Devils bulldozed the Holy Trinity Titans 43-2, and the Pauline Johnson Thunderbirds edged the Waterford Wolves 38-35 under the Friday night lights in Brantford. Buckle up—this season promises highlight-reel action every week!
