Parents across Huron County are speaking out after learning that London Bridge will no longer run before and after school programs in the area, leaving families scrambling to find childcare.
Concerned parent, Marnie Van Esbroeck said the announcement came as a shock.
She explained the school boards and even London Bridge staff found out at the same time as parents.
Van Esbroeck said the closure has been difficult for her family and many others.
Parents have been reaching out to one another to find short-term solutions, but many are worried about what comes next.
She and other parents have started an online petition asking local school boards to take over before and after school care where third-party providers are not available.
Other regions like Waterloo and Halton school boards are already run these programs successfully.
According to Van Esbroeck, this will change schools in the area.
She also mentioned this will leave a major gap for working families, including teachers, healthcare workers, and tradespeople, who rely on childcare to do their jobs.
Parents say the loss of programs could force some families to make tough choices, such as switching schools or even leaving their jobs. While some have managed temporary fixes through family or friends, many do not have that option.
To help push for change, parents are circulating their petition online and plan to launch a website, extendtheday.ca, where families can find updates and resources. Van Esbroeck hopes the school boards will step in soon.
