South Huron Fire Chief Jeremy Becker is reminding residents to take part in Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 5th to 11th, and focus on keeping their homes and workplaces safe.
This year’s theme highlights the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries.
Becker explained that these batteries need to be stored and charged safely.
While unattended kitchen fires have long been the leading cause of home fires, lithium-ion battery incidents are becoming more common.
In case of a fire, Becker emphasized that safety comes first.
Becker also encouraged families to practice their home escape plans so everyone knows where to meet during an emergency.
For those in need of smoke alarms, South Huron Fire Department has free alarms available.
Residents can call the fire department to get one.
