This December marks three years since Alexandra Marine and General Hospital (AMGH) in Goderich and South Huron Hospital (SHH) in Exeter joined together to form the Huron Health System (HHS). The partnership was created to strengthen local healthcare by sharing resources, knowledge, and innovation, with a shared goal of providing excellent, person-centred care.
Since coming together, the two hospitals have achieved several important successes. Both have maintained 24/7 emergency services without any closures, ensuring communities have constant access to urgent care. South Huron Hospital has also expanded local services, including more mental health supports, surgical consultations, and diagnostic imaging.
Mental health care has improved with faster access to psychiatric consultations and stronger partnerships with community groups, which has helped reduce wait times. As SHH awaits a decision from the Ministry of Health on its CT scanner application, 60 percent of patients needing imaging have been referred to AMGH to make sure they receive timely care. Both hospitals have also earned Accreditation Canada’s highest recognition for quality and safety.
