Several Bluewater bylaws identified by council as local priorities may soon be enforced proactively rather than relying solely on public complaints. During its November 3 meeting, council passed a motion directing staff to update the municipality’s bylaw enforcement complaint policy. The revised policy will include a list of bylaws designated for proactive enforcement.
Currently, most bylaws in Bluewater are enforced through a complaint-based system, meaning action is only taken after residents report violations. A proactive approach would allow enforcement officers to address issues without waiting for formal complaints.
Council highlighted four key areas for proactive enforcement: parking, immediate health and safety risks, property standards, and short-term rentals. Bylaw services in Bluewater are provided by Tenet Security Group, which also serves several neighbouring municipalities, including South Huron.
Council also directed staff to explore the creation of a public education initiative similar to Kingston’s “Good Neighbour” program, which offers residents an accessible guide to municipal bylaws and promotes community awareness.
