Goderich is preparing for one of its biggest holiday traditions, the Festival of Lights and the annual Santa Claus Parade. The celebrations begin on Saturday, November 22nd, with a full evening of music, lights, and holiday spirit.
Tourism and Community Development Manager, Jenna Ujiye, told myFM about the event.
Performers John and Melina Powers will take the stage, along with some young helpers. Free hot chocolate will be available for everyone to enjoy.
Ujiye says this moment is magical every year, as the whole square lights up at once.
Following the Lighting of the Light, the annual Santa Claus Parade begins.
The parade kicks off at 7:15 p.m. on West Street and makes its way around the downtown square.
This event is considered the official kickoff to the holiday season in Goderich. Ujiye says it’s a long-time tradition.
Parade floats travel up West Street, circle the square, and finish on South Street, giving visitors plenty of places to watch.
Along with the Festival of Lights, the community will also host the Candlelight Ceremony on Friday, November 21st at Lions Harbour Park.
This memorial event, honours loved ones who have passed away. Three trees will be lit, and the names of people remembered will be read aloud. The tradition began in the early 1990s with the Angel Tree, created by a local couple who lost their daughter.
More holiday events, such as Breakfast with Santa and other community celebrations, will be posted soon on the town’s website and social media pages.
Ujiye says this time of year is special for everyone and they look forward to welcoming the community to another festive season in Goderich.
