Huron County OPP will now provide winter road closure updates through the Municipal 511 website, giving drivers quick and reliable information during severe weather. The update will be available at all times, and will serve as the main source for emergency road closure notices across the county. OPP West Region will also continue to share information on its social media pages, including X, Instagram and Facebook.
The new approach is in place immediately. When winter weather makes driving unsafe, the Huron County OPP will post closure updates directly to Municipal 511, helping map applications refresh with current road conditions. Staff Sergeant Ryan Olmstead says this will allow officers to share live updates, showing exactly when a road is closed or reopened on an interactive map. He encourages residents to use Municipal 511 as their main source for road closure information this winter.
Municipal 511 is designed to help police, municipalities and the public stay connected during weather emergencies. The website will show closures on provincial highways as well as county and township roads. Police close roads when needed to keep people safe, maintain traffic flow, and allow emergency crews to do their work. Drivers are reminded that it is against the law to ignore a road closure or disobey an officer directing traffic, and fines may be higher in community safety zones.
Huron County and several municipalities are already using Municipal 511 to share information on road work, public events, repairs and restrictions. With winter weather on the way, residents are encouraged to check Municipal 511 before traveling to stay informed and stay safe.
