Haldimand OPP are reminding drivers of the importance of proper child restraints after charging a motorist who allegedly failed to secure a young passenger during a routine spot check.
The incident took place on Friday, December 5, 2025, at around 9:40 p.m., when officers were conducting a R.I.D.E. check on McClung Road in Caledonia.
Police say a vehicle drove into the checkpoint and officers immediately noticed a small child lying down in the rear passenger seat, unrestrained and not in an appropriate car seat.
As a result, a 50-year-old driver from Stoney Creek has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with “Drive While Child Passenger Not Properly Secured.”
The OPP continue to stress that drivers are responsible for ensuring all children are buckled into proper, age-appropriate car seats or booster seats every time they are in a vehicle.
They add that wearing seatbelts—and ensuring all passengers are safely secured—remains one of the most effective ways to protect families from serious injury or death in the event of a collision.
