Though the weather has calmed over the past couple of days, drivers across Huron County are being asked to stay off the roads when winter weather creates dangerous conditions. Huron OPP Constable Craig Soldan says heavy snow, blowing wind and sudden whiteouts have already caused problems in several areas, including around Goderich and Exeter.
Constable Soldan says right now, the safest choice is to stay home if you do not need to travel, even if the weather looks okay.
He says road conditions can change quickly, and even a short drive for something simple can turn into a dangerous situation. He says many people believe they can make a quick trip, but it is not worth the risk if visibility is poor or the roads are slippery.
He shared an example from earlier this week when a driver was in a rush to get home.
He says meetings, errands and plans can always be rescheduled, but a life cannot be replaced. Loved ones are counting on drivers to make safe choices and come home.
He says many people end up stuck in ditches every winter and may wait hours for a tow truck because companies are so busy.
He says being prepared can make a big difference if you are stranded in the cold. But the best option, he says, is still to avoid travelling unless it is absolutely necessary.
