Cold weather is continuing across Huron and Perth counties today, and Environment and Climate Change Canada says very cold temperatures are expected to return again later this week. Wind chill values today could range from minus 16 to minus 30 degrees Celsius, with the coldest conditions expected overnight in most areas.
Huron Perth Public Health is reminding residents that extreme cold can be dangerous and can lead to cold-related injuries such as frostnip, frostbite, and hypothermia. These conditions are preventable, but they can happen quickly in very cold weather. Cold temperatures can also make existing health problems worse, especially for people with heart or lung conditions.
Public Health says the risk is highest for people experiencing homelessness, older adults, infants and young children, people with ongoing health conditions, and anyone who works or spends a lot of time outdoors.
Residents are encouraged to check the weather before heading outside and to limit time outdoors during extreme cold. Children should be kept indoors when temperatures reach minus 27 degrees Celsius or colder, including the wind chill. People are also asked to check in on friends, family members, and neighbours to make sure they are warm and safe.
Dressing properly is important during cold weather. Public Health recommends wearing warm layers, along with a hat, gloves, a scarf, warm socks, and waterproof boots. People should watch for signs of cold-related injuries and seek help if symptoms appear. Staying warm and dry is also key, and anyone who gets wet should change into dry clothing as soon as possible. Warm drinks can help, but alcohol and caffeine should be avoided.
Travel should be limited when possible, and anyone who must drive is encouraged to keep an emergency kit in their vehicle.
