A Cold Weather Alert will remain in effect for Lambton County until Sunday, February 1st, according to Lambton Public Health.
The alert was first issued on Monday, January 26th by Lambton County’s Medical Officer of Health and will continue due to ongoing cold conditions forecast by Environment and Climate Change Canada. Lambton Public Health is advising local agencies that provide shelter and support to people experiencing homelessness to prepare for increased demand during this period.
Residents are being reminded to take steps to protect themselves from the cold. Dressing in warm layers, covering exposed skin such as the head, neck, and face, and limiting time outdoors can help reduce the risk of cold-related illness. Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures can be dangerous and even life-threatening.
Public Health notes that hypothermia can happen in any season when the body temperature drops below normal. Symptoms may include pale skin, confusion, extreme tiredness, heavy shivering, and hallucinations. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek warmth and medical help right away.
More information about cold weather risks, including hypothermia and frostbite, can be found on the Lambton Public Health website.
People who are experiencing homelessness, or who are concerned about someone without shelter, are encouraged to contact Lambton County Social Services at 519-344-2062 during regular business hours. Help is also available after hours through the Good Shepherd’s Lodge at 519-344-1679.
