United Way Perth-Huron is inviting the community to take part in a special three-week learning series focused on homelessness and local supports.
The sessions are part of Wake-Up Wednesdays at the Goderich Legion’s Café 109 and will run from 9 to 10 a.m. on February 4th, 11th, and 18th. The series is designed to help people better understand homelessness, learn why the Coldest Night of the Year walk matters, and discover ways to take action in the community.
The first session, called “Why We Walk,” takes place on February 4th. It focuses on the purpose of the Coldest Night of the Year and how money raised supports local programs that help people facing hurt, hunger, and homelessness. Participants will learn how the funds are used and why community support is important to reaching this year’s goal.
On February 11th, the second session, “Awareness to Action,” looks at the complex causes of homelessness. United Way will share information on proven solutions, including the importance of housing first. People will also be encouraged to support housing-focused policies and help identify a possible location for a local Connection Centre.
The final session, “Hidden Gems,” happens on February 18th. It will highlight two important local supports: the 211 help line and free tax clinics. The session will explain how 211 connects people to services in their area and how tax clinics help residents on low incomes access benefits they may be missing.
United Way Perth-Huron hopes the series will give residents useful information and inspire them to be part of positive change in the community.
