As the region moves through the peak of cold and flu season, Huron Health System is reminding residents that respiratory illnesses are still circulating at high levels and extra caution is still needed.
Huron Health System, which includes Alexandra Marine and General Hospital in Goderich and South Huron Hospital in Exeter, says that while cases of influenza A have started to decline, other illnesses remain active. COVID-19, RSV, and pneumonia levels are staying steady across the region. RSV and pneumonia are common during the winter months and usually begin to slow down around March, although they can continue into April. COVID-19 does not follow a regular seasonal pattern and can circulate at any time of year.
Huron Health System is encouraging people to take simple steps to stay healthy and reduce the spread of illness. These include staying up to date on vaccinations, washing hands often or using hand sanitizer, staying home when sick, and considering wearing a mask in crowded or higher-risk settings. Health officials say these actions help protect vulnerable people and reduce pressure on local hospitals.
To help keep patients, staff, and visitors safe, hospitals are strongly asking anyone with cold, flu, COVID-19, or other respiratory symptoms to avoid visiting in person.
