Carrie Parsons has been a dedicated volunteer at Jessica’s House Hospice for almost eight years. As a trained direct care volunteer, she spends her time inside the hospice helping residents and supporting their families. On any day, Carrie may prepare light meals, do laundry, help with groceries, tidy the home, or simply sit with residents. She says the most important part of her work is being present with people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
Carrie began volunteering in 2018 as she prepared for retirement. With more free time ahead, she wanted to give back to her community and felt Jessica’s House was the right place for her.
She says she feels rewarded every time she walks through the hospice doors. Making even a small difference in someone’s day means a lot to her. She also finds it powerful to see family members spending time together as family, not as caregivers.
Carrie believes volunteers are essential because organizations like Jessica’s House depend on them to operate each day. Skilled and caring volunteers allow these services to continue and make a big difference in the community.
For anyone thinking about volunteering, Carrie’s advice is simple: don’t let fear or lack of time stop you. Reach out and give it a try.
