Darren Kints says volunteering has been part of his life for as long as he can remember. He grew up watching his parents give their time to minor sports and the local hospital auxiliary, and that example stayed with him. Giving back to the community has always felt natural to him.
Over the years, Darren has been involved in many groups. He helped launch the South Huron Hospital Foundation Gala, an event that has grown into one of the community’s largest and most successful fundraisers. He also spent time as president of Exeter Minor Hockey, now South Huron Minor Hockey, helping guide the organization to where it is today.
Darren says one of the most rewarding parts of volunteering is seeing young athletes grow up. He says it means a lot when former players still call him “coach” years later.
He believes volunteers are the backbone of a small community like South Huron. From large events like the hospital gala and local rodeo to the strength of minor and junior hockey programs, he says none of it would be possible without people willing to give their time.
For anyone thinking about volunteering, Darren says it may not require as much time as people think. He encourages residents, especially young people, to reach out to local organizations that match their interests. He says most groups are always looking for extra help and welcome new volunteers.
