Tuition is set to rise and OSAP grants will be much lower with changes announced by the provincial government yesterday in response to what it calls a post-secondary financial crisis.
Colleges and universities will be permitted to raise tuition by 2 per cent annually for next three years following a years-long tuition freeze.
A student rep says the OSAP changes will hit students hard.
The allocation of OSAP funding for eligible students in the new school year will be reduced to a maximum of 25 per cent for grants, with funding for loans increased to a minimum of 75 per cent.
Currently, students can receive a maximum of 85 per cent as grants — which do not have to be repaid — and a minimum of 15 per cent as loans that need to be paid back.
