The Ontario government is offering more funding to municipalities through the Road Safety Initiatives Fund (RSIF) to make local roads safer. Starting February 19, 2026, eligible municipalities can apply for a share of the $210 million program to support safety measures in school zones and community safety zones without relying on speed cameras.
The RSIF supports traffic-calming measures such as speed bumps, raised crosswalks, roundabouts, high-visibility signage, and targeted police enforcement in school and community safety zones. Last fall, the province launched the program to help municipalities move away from speed cameras and focus on proven ways to slow traffic.
In response to public concerns about the use of speed cameras to raise revenue, a law passed in November 2025 now prohibits municipal speed cameras across Ontario.
