The US Supreme Court has ruled that President Donald Trump exceeded his authority when imposing tariffs using a law that’s reserved for national emergencies.
The decision came this morning after a 6-3 vote that Trump’s approach to tariffs under the emergency law was not permitted under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
The decision does not affect all of Trump’s tariffs, leaving in place ones he imposed on steel and aluminum using different laws, but does impact tariffs imposed against Canada, Mexico and China in response to fentanyl being moved into the US.
