The Ontario Provincial Police are investigating several cases of extortion across southwestern Ontario.
Since 2024, police have identified 10 cases that follow a similar pattern. These are in addition to more than 50 cases already under investigation in the Caledon and Dufferin areas.
Police say the cases involve phone calls or text messages that threaten violence unless a large amount of money is paid. In many situations, the caller appears to know personal details, such as the victim’s home address or workplace. Investigators say members of the South Asian community appear to have been specifically targeted.
The OPP has also responded to several weapons incidents where buildings were damaged by gunfire. No injuries have been reported. Police believe these shootings are connected to the threats and extortion attempts.
Extortion is defined by the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre as unlawfully obtaining money, property or services through threats or coercion.
Police are urging anyone who receives a threatening call or message to report it right away. They advise people not to respond to the caller, not to send any money, and to block the phone number. Individuals are also encouraged to reach out to someone they trust or contact victim services for support.
The investigation is being led by OPP West Region, under the direction of the Criminal Investigation Branch.
Anyone who has received threats or has information about these incidents is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
