A local athlete is preparing to represent Canada on one of the world’s biggest stages.
Tyler McGregor of Forest, has been named one of Canada’s flag bearers for the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Paralympics tonight in Italy. The captain of Canada’s Para ice hockey team will share the honour with Para Nordic skiing star Natalie Wilkie.
McGregor said he was surprised when he learned he had been chosen for the role.
This will be McGregor’s fourth Paralympic Games. Over his career, he has already won two silver medals and one bronze with Team Canada and has also helped the team capture world championship titles.
Despite competing on the international stage, McGregor says his hometown continues to play a big role in his journey. He says the support from the community has been overwhelming.
McGregor added that he hopes to return home to Forest after the Games and spend time with family and friends.
Heading into the tournament, he says the Canadian team feels confident after years of preparation.
McGregor says while the team is focused on the tournament, he also wants Canadians to know how much their support means.
Canada be represented by a team of 50 athletes. The Para ice hockey competition begins on Saturday when Canada takes on Slovakia .
