The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority is warning that heavy rain expected this week could lead to minor flooding in parts of the Ausable Bayfield watershed.
Officials say between 25 and 50 millimetres of rain is forecast to fall starting Tuesday night and continuing through Wednesday. Some areas could see even higher amounts if thunderstorms develop.
Water levels in the watershed have been slowly dropping, but they are still higher than normal after recent snowmelt and rainfall. Over the past four days, the area has already received between 20 and 40 millimetres of rain. With the ground already saturated, much of the new rainfall will likely run off into rivers and streams, causing water levels to rise again.
Because of this, the conservation authority says minor flooding is possible in low-lying floodplain areas. If the higher end of the rainfall forecast occurs, some secondary roads that are prone to flooding could also be affected.
Residents are being reminded to stay away from rivers, streams, and other waterways. Water is expected to move quickly and banks may be slippery and unstable. Cold water temperatures could also create dangerous conditions.
Municipal staff are also being asked to watch local drainage areas where water often collects.
The advisory is expected to remain in place until noon on March 16th, unless conditions change. The conservation authority says it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if needed.
