Police are reminding drivers to stay safe behind the wheel as Road Safety Week approaches.
Police Constable Katherine Lockwood says Road Safety Week will run from May 12th to 18th. The national campaign aims to encourage safer driving and reduce injuries and deaths on Canadian roads.
Lockwood says something as simple as wearing a seatbelt can save lives, but some drivers still forget to buckle up.
Distracted driving is also a major concern. Lockwood says using a cell phone while driving can be extremely dangerous.
She says stricter penalties have helped reduce the number of offences, however, some drivers are still taking risks.
Lockwood is also urging drivers to never get behind the wheel if they have been drinking or using drugs.
Drivers can expect to see an increased police presence throughout the week, including spot checks for impaired driving.
Lockwood says the message is simple.
