The Professional Women’s Hockey League is officially expanding to Hamilton, Ontario, with a new team set to hit the ice for the 2026-27 season, bringing top-level women’s hockey to a region long known for its deep roots in the sport.
The Hamilton franchise will play out of TD Coliseum and joins Las Vegas and Detroit as part of the league’s latest expansion. League officials say Hamilton’s passionate fan base, made it a natural fit.
Fan support was already evident earlier this year when 16,012 people attended a Takeover Tour game in Hamilton — one of the largest crowds in league history.
PWHL Executive Vice President Jayna Hefford said the response confirmed the city’s readiness.
“Hamilton and its surrounding communities have long been central to the growth of girls’ and women’s hockey, producing generations of talented players and passionate fans,” said Hefford.
Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath called the expansion a major moment for the city.
“This is an exciting moment for Hamiltonians and another major step forward for our growing sports and entertainment sector.”
The team will wear gold, maroon, and cream — colours that honour Hamilton’s sports history and industrial roots. A team name and logo are expected to be announced at a later date.
