The Victoria Day long weekend is here, marking the unofficial start of summer across Ontario, and warm weather is expected to arrive just in time.
Environment Canada is calling for a mix of sun and cloud on Monday with a high of 29 degrees, giving residents and visitors plenty of reason to head outdoors and enjoy the holiday.
This year, shoppers may notice more businesses open on the holiday after the Ontario government announced in March that retailers would be allowed to remain open on Victoria Day and Family Day.
In Exeter, both Hansen’s and Foodland will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Meanwhile in Grand Bend, Sobeys will operate during regular hours from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. No Frills will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., while the new Food Basics location will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Anyone planning to spend the weekend in Grand Bend is also being reminded to keep safety in mind as crowds return to the beach area for the holiday weekend. Alcohol is not allowed on the beach and visitors are reminded that Grand Bend Beach remains smoke and vape free.
Officials are also warning that water temperatures in Lake Huron are still very cold this time of year. The Grand Bend Beach Patrol season has not yet started, meaning lifeguards are not currently on duty.
Visitors should also be prepared for paid parking, which resumes May 15th. Parking can be paid at designated locations or through the parking app where available.
Drivers travelling to Grand Bend are also being reminded that lane restrictions remain in place on the Grand Bend Bridge due to ongoing construction. Delays are expected, with all lanes expected to reopen by June 26th.
As usual, municipal buildings, landfills, government offices, banks, libraries, and many municipal services will be closed for the holiday Monday.
Hospitals and emergency departments will remain open for urgent care needs, although some outpatient clinics may be closed.
As always, the Victoria Day weekend brings more people into our communities. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, be sure to share the road, be patient, and show kindness to others around you.
From all of us at myFM, have a safe and happy long weekend! We’ll be back with more local news on Tuesday.
